Where to find your radio serial number

Updated · 4 min read

Your radio code is tied to one thing: the radio's serial number. Here's what it looks like, where it's printed, and how to take a photo that's easy to read.

What the serial looks like

The serial is 14 characters long, letters and numbers, and starts with three letters that show the make:

For example: VWZ1Z2A1234567. It's often printed next to a barcode, sometimes with "SN" in front.

Example radio label: the serial starts with VWZ, while the part number starts with digits RADIO RCD 310 1K0 035 186 AA SN VWZ1Z2A1234567 ✓ This is the serial ✗ Part number, not this
Illustration only. Real labels vary in layout, but the serial always starts with VWZ, AUZ, SKZ or SEZ.

Don't confuse it with the part number

The same label usually also shows a part number, which starts with digits, for example 1K0 035 186. That identifies the model of radio, not your individual unit, so a code can't be worked out from it. You also don't need your registration number or VIN.

Where the label is

The label is on the casing of the radio itself, usually on the top or one side. So in most cars you need to slide the radio out of the dashboard to read it:

Pull the radio out gently and only as far as you need to see the label. There's no need to unplug it. Some radios can show their serial on screen through a hidden menu, but this varies from model to model, so the printed label is the reliable source.

Taking a good photo of the label

We ask for a photo of the label with every order, so we can check the serial before working out your code. To make it easy to read:

If the label is badly damaged, contact us with a photo before you order and we'll tell you whether we can help.

Quick answers

Where is the serial number on a VW radio?

On a label on the radio casing, usually the top or side. It is 14 characters and starts with VWZ. You normally need to slide the radio out with release keys or, on some units, Torx T20 screws to read it.

Is the radio serial number the same as the part number?

No. The part number starts with digits, such as 1K0 035 186, and identifies the radio model. The serial starts with VWZ, AUZ, SKZ or SEZ and identifies your individual unit.
