Why newer VW Group radios have no radio code

Updated · 4 min read

Not every VW Group radio has a 4-digit code. Newer touchscreen systems use a different protection called Component Protection, and no code service can unlock it. Here's how to tell which kind you have before you spend any money.

Which radios use a 4-digit code?

Most VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT radios from roughly the 2000s and early 2010s, for example the VW RCD 210, 310 and 510 or RNS 310, 315 and 510, Audi Concert, Chorus and Symphony, Škoda Swing, Bolero and Columbus, and pre-MIB SEAT units. These show SAFE and ask for a code after a power cut. Their label has a 14-character serial starting VWZ, AUZ, SKZ or SEZ.

Which ones don't?

MIB2, MIB3 and MQB-Evo infotainment systems, as fitted to cars such as the:

and other models of the same generation. These don't have a 4-digit anti-theft code. Instead they use Component Protection: the unit is registered to the car it's fitted to.

What Component Protection does

If a protected unit is moved into a different car, it shows a "Component Protection" message and some features stop working until it's registered to the new car. Clearing it requires an online connection to the manufacturer's systems, so it's done by a main dealer or a specialist with that access. There's no code to type in, so buying a "radio code" won't help.

If you've only disconnected or changed the battery on a car with its original MIB unit, the system normally just restarts on its own, with no code needed.

How to tell which you have

Need your code? Original 4-digit code from your radio's serial. VW £19.99, Audi, Škoda and SEAT £24.99. 1–3 hours on average, money-back guarantee.

Get my code

Quick answers

Can you get a radio code for a Golf Mk7 or Audi A3 8V?

No. These cars usually have MIB2 or later units that use online Component Protection instead of a 4-digit code. Only a main dealer or a specialist with online access can clear it.

My MIB radio went off after a battery change. Do I need a code?

Normally not. A MIB unit in its original car usually restarts by itself after a battery change. Component Protection is triggered when a unit is moved to a different car.
