Entered the wrong radio code? How the SAFE 2 lockout works

Updated · 4 min read

Typed in a code and the radio didn't accept it? Don't keep trying. VW Group radios lock themselves after wrong entries, and every extra guess can make things worse.

What SAFE 2 means

After repeated wrong codes, usually two, the radio blocks any further entry and shows SAFE 2, or on some units a countdown. It isn't damaged; it's simply refusing codes for a while to stop someone guessing their way in.

How to clear the lockout

  1. Switch the ignition on and the radio on, so it's showing SAFE.
  2. Leave it switched on for an unbroken 60 minutes. On most units, switching off restarts the hour, so don't turn the ignition off or let the radio power down.
  3. When SAFE clears, or the display goes back to the normal entry screen, enter the correct code carefully, once.

Our free in-car SAFE timer runs on your phone and keeps the screen awake while you wait.

Battery and safety: an hour with the ignition on can drain the battery. Use a battery charger, or run the engine outdoors only, never in a closed garage.

Why the code might have been rejected

Don't guess

Avoid "code calculators" and guessing. Each wrong attempt can lock the radio again, and on some units the waiting time gets longer. Get the code from the serial, check the digits twice, then enter it once.

Need your code? Original 4-digit code from your radio's serial. VW £19.99, Audi, Škoda and SEAT £24.99. 1–3 hours on average, money-back guarantee.

Get my code

If a code from us is rejected once the lockout has cleared, send us a short video showing the serial label and the code being entered. If it's our mistake, you get a full refund under our money-back guarantee.

Quick answers

What does SAFE 2 mean on a VW radio?

SAFE 2 means wrong codes have been entered and the radio has locked itself. Leave the ignition and radio on for an unbroken 60 minutes until SAFE clears, then enter the correct code once.

Does turning the car off reset the SAFE timer?

On most units, yes. The radio needs to stay switched on with the ignition on for a full, unbroken hour before it accepts a code again.
